Letter of InquiryA letter of inquiry can be of 2 types– Solicited or Unsolicited. What‘s the difference? Well, let‘s say you see an advertisement in the newspaper by a company that has launched a new product. You are interested and write to the company, seeking more information. This is a solicited letter of inquiry because you are acting on an advertisement placed by the company. However, let‘s say you find out about this product from somewhere else, and you write to the company for more information. This time, it is an unsolicited letter of inquiry, because the company has not directly advertised anything. Now the important part– how does this make a difference to you? Simply put, when you write an unsolicited letter, the company or the person you are writing to is not expecting your letter. So you need to make sure that the letter clearly sates WHY you are writing the letter. Here‘s an example of an unsolicited inquiry letter about a product.
